Abstract

Reducing emission from fuelwood use and deforestation rate with Improved Cook Stoves in selected communities in Oti and Volta regions of Ghana.

The Volta River in Ghana is dammed at Akosombo for hydroelectric power generation. Communities along the Volta Lake however heavily relied on trees along the lake for fuelwood, which was used for cooking activities in Traditional Three Stone Stoves (T3SS). The reduced tree cover resulted in high evapotranspiration and reduced water levels for electricity generation. The threat posed by the reduced volume of water for hydropower generation has been exacerbated by climate change and deforestation. Improved Cook Stoves (ICS), which were believed to consume less fuelwood, was introduced but its adoption was low. This study sought to ascertain the extent to which the ICSs have reduced fuelwood consumption and lowered emission of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Particulate Matter (PM2.5). A cross-sectional study was conducted using mixed methods with 184 respondents purposively selected; and 20 stoves made up of 10 ICS and 10 T3SS were randomly selected for Controlled Cooking Test (CCT) based on the procedures and formulae of Bailis (2007). Three cooking per stove was undertaken making a total of 60 controlled cooking tests. A T-test showed that the ICS reduced 58% of CO and 50% of PM2.5 when compared to the T3SS and was statistically significant. Further, The ICS saved 0.05 kg of firewood per cooking during the CCT. Though this is not statistically significant; the use of ICS to cook three times per day, for a year will save 54.75kg of firewood per household. The ICS has the potential to reduce deforestation in the reforested areas and reduce Greenhouse gas emission when adopted and used on a large scale. In conclusion, we emphasize the sustainability dimension of using an improved cookstove in the study area.

Abstract

Effects of Teaching Methods on the Academic Performance of Students in the Subject Geography; a Case Study of Soul Clinic International School, Accra- Ghana.

Teaching Geography is within a defined frame of curriculum to achieve good results. The quality of the educational system of any country greatly depends on the education of their teachers and the methods employed by teachers in teaching. This study sought to identify the teaching methods used in teaching Geography, the effectiveness of the methods and how the methods were affecting the academic performance of students in Soul Clinic International school. The study employed a mixed-method approach with 60 students and 6 teachers who completed close and open-ended questionnaires. From the study, the method used in teaching geography was the teacher-student interactive method with its techniques such as lecture, project works, question and answer. The majority of the students noted the methods and techniques were effective and this influenced their good performance in the subject. Students proposed teachers use more videos in explaining natural phenomena than diagrams. The study concluded that the use of the various techniques of the teacher-student interactive method was allowing students to think critically and enjoy their Geography lessons. The study recommended that teachers should be more patient with low performing students and carefully select their techniques to suit the topic under study for easy understanding of students.

Abstract

Successes, Challenges and Coping Strategies of women entrepreneurs: A case study of Greater Accra.

This study investigated the success, challenges and coping strategies of women entrepreneurs involved in large-scale formal businesses in Accra-Ghana. In carrying out the investigation, the study employed a Snowball sampling method with an emphasis on in-depth interviews.  The study included twenty women operating in diverse forms of large-scale formal enterprises. All the respondents agreed that the major factors that contributed to their successes were self-motivation, formal and informal education, family support and business links. Their main challenges were access to loan facilities from financial institutions and the cultural stereotype role of women in society.  The study also pointed out that, women must be either single, divorced or widowed to be able to attain the potential of their businesses. The study recommended that society, especially men, should be sensitized to disabuse their minds of the stereotypical cultural roles of women. Also, the government should include entrepreneurial courses in the educational system with pragmatic policies geared towards encouraging banks, donor agencies and credit unions to assist women entrepreneurs.
